What is STEM in the Gym?
STEM in the Gym is an integrative way to reinforce science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, concepts into physical education through a kinesthetic approach. It's a fun way to teach children core content areas in the fitness arena and help the kinesthetic learner connect to academics.
According to Charles Hillman, associate professor at the University of Illinois, "Exercise can....affect cognition...just as it affects muscles" (Newsweek, March 2007). Children need to get out of their seats and stay actively engaged. It is simply a matter of reversing our thinking and combining academics with exercise to give children the best win-win experience that education can offer.
